A hypothetical situation: Carl Edwards and Mark Martin

The worst thing you can give a guy like me is free time and a chance for my mind to work. Oh, that and an outlet for people to read my stuff. But hear me out folks. This is an intriguing but very unlikely scenario.

And needless to say, my track record with predictions is very hit and miss. I did properly predict the 2009 UC perfect season, and although I was a year early, in 2008 I said it would be awesome to see UC play Florida in a BCS bowl game.

So, that being said, you can take this semi-dream hypothetical situation however you’d like to.

Jenna Fryer, of the Associated Press, wrote an article which I stumbled upon early yesterday (Sunday) afternoon which stated that Carl Edwards’s bargaining power in this the final year of his contract with Roush Fenway Racing just keeps getting higher and higher. (Check out Jenna Fryer’s article here: http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news;_ylt=Ai9yxv1jDm0r9Lmb9P3UEKvov7YF?slug=ap-nascar-carlscost)

He’s leading the Sprint Cup points over five-time defending champ Jimmie Johnson, and has one win this season (Las Vegas). That was all before this past weekend where all he did was go out and literally spank the field in the All-Star race on Saturday night, earning $1 million-plus in the process.

But since he’s a free agent after this year, the rumor mill has started turning. Edwards side-stepped the question on Saturday night.

“All I’ll say about that is we’re running really well right now and it’s because of Jack Roush, Ford, all these people’s hard work,” Edwards said. “Those talks are going on behind closed doors and we’ll hopefully get something done. But right now we’re running well and that is fun.

“What I’m trying to do is focus on that because we have a championship to win this year. That’s the No. 1 goal.”

So did his owner, Jack Roush.

“I try to stay out of the money part of it, but I will have to pay attention to this deal as it gets closer,” Roush said. “It’s not something that we’re going to debate or discuss in the public. It’s not a media issue, it’s a private business issue that’s ongoing.”

So you’re wondering where I’m headed, hear me out. Carl Edwards is a free agent, so what happens if he leaves Roush Fenway Racing?

Who else is a “free agent” after this year? Mark Martin. Again, hear me out. I think the chances that Edwards leaves RFR are very low. And in fact, I hope he stays at RFR. I love Carl Edwards. He’s one heck of a spokesperson, and sometimes it’s not for his own company.

After he lost the Southern 500 to Regan Smith Edwards was interviewed by FOX, and said something along the lines of, “Congrats to Regan. You know, I need a new mattress, so I should go to Denver Matress.”

I literally shook my head in disbelief. Carl is so good at being a spokesperson sometimes you don’t know what you’re hearing him say. Cue the Duck.

Right before this 2009 interview, Carl Edwards asked the media members gathered around him, "Do I have any Subway in my teeth?"

If, by that small chance Edwards decides to leave RFR, how awesome would it be to see Mark Martin return to Roush, a place where he made his name driving the No. 6 car for Jack Roush? Of course it would be interesting to see if Mark ended up back in the six car or if he’d be put in the No. 99, or some other car number, but as I said earlier, this probably won’t happen.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if it did though? I’m just dreaming, forgive me for doing so.
