Only 57 days ago Jimmie Johnson raised the 2009 Sprint Cup championship trophy in Homestead, clinching his spot amongst the NASCAR immortals by locking up his fourth straight championship.
Last year I sat down almost daily from Martin Luther King Jr. Day until the drop of the green flag in Daytona and wrote about the upcoming season. For me, a Mark Martin fan, the anticipation for 2009 season was high. Martin, now 51 years old, was coming back to NASCAR full-time after two part-time seasons, and he had one of the best rides in the business at Hendrick Motorsports.
Last year I looked at the numbers and some of the fun memories that those numbers brought for me as a long-time NASCAR fan. Those who stopped by and read the musings were reminded why NASCAR is the greatest sport in America.
It’s not just the drivers, crew members and other personalities involved with the sport that make NASCAR fun to watch and fun to be around, but it is the fans and the bond between them that makes NASCAR one of the coolest life experiences one could ever be a part of.
In only 27 days—less than one calendar month—the green flag will drop on the 2010 NASCAR season, a season that is once again highly anticipated by not just myself and other Mark Martin fans, but fans of all drivers. On February 14, the day of the “Great American Race” all drivers will start with an equal chance at knocking Johnson off his throne.
But can anyone?
It will be one of the most covered stories this season. Jay Hart of Yahoo! Sports answered a reader e-mail last week by saying, “A theme for the 2010 season appears to be growing: Dethrone Jimmie Johnson.” This reader’s pick to win it all (not that this reader knows anymore than any of us, or any less for that matter)? Mark Martin.
