My best friend

It’s rare to find one in this world, but when you do, you have to hold onto them. Best friends. They’re worth more than anything, and for the past year and a half, or so, I’ve found one.

Meet Sarah. In fact, she’s got her own blog (http://sarahmstarcher.blogspot.com/) and it’s about all the things she wants to do before she dies. It’s where I got the idea for the “7 things I need to do before graduating” post from last week.

Needless to say, she deserves a book written about her, but one short blog post will have to do.

She knows more about me than I care to admit, and I know more about her than I care to admit as well. Who knew that four years ago when we began our collegiate career here at UC that we’d ever become this close.

Four years ago we both shared a few classes in our “learning community.” So we’d see one another, but we rarely interacted during class. However, we both refereed intramural volleyball and began hanging out on weeknights in the Rec Center, blowing whistles and enjoying our time watching volleyball.

Sarah (left), me (middle) and Carolynn (right) who is another member of our refereeing crew. We all met in September of 2007, and have shared a bond ever since.

We developed a bond that would last for years, even though we rarely saw one another until November of 2009, when we began hanging out a lot. A lot.

I was thinking last night about how different things would be if I didn’t have a best friend like Sarah in my life. She can tell you, I literally turn to her for anything and everything, and she does the same for me.

A couple of weeks ago, as she mentioned in her most recent blog post, her grandmother passed away, in almost the same way that my grandfather did last July. Even though I was over 100 miles away, she leaned on me for support, just as I would have in that situation.

But it’s more than that too. Last night she was bored at work. I spent two hours hanging out and chatting with her while she was at work.

A lot of people get the wrong impression about the two of us, and if you know me, you know I’m not exactly the guy who has a lot of friends who are girls. So, naturally, when people who know this see me with a girl quite often, I see how they are led to believe that we are dating. Far from it.

This picture was taken on Halloween last year

I see Sarah as the sister I never had. Sure that ticked off my brother, who doesn’t seem ready to adopt Sarah as the big sister he never had, but he didn’t get to vote in it.

We’re just that close. If anyone ever did anything bad to her, she knows I’d protect her like a brother would.

So instead of spending my time telling people that we aren’t dating, but we’re almost like brother and sister, I’ll just point them to this blog post. (Plus it’s a great way to gain readership. I’m better at selling things than Michael Waltrip right now)

And it’s one more chance to thank her for being my best friend. Sure I’ve had plenty of best friends throughout my life, and all of them are still pretty close to me, (and I hope none of them are angry at this post either) but none of them are currently as close to me as Sarah.

So, here’s to my best friend, the girl who is like my sister, and will be forever.

Have a great day and please send prayers and thoughts to those affected by yesterday’s horrific weather event in the south. Many of the NASCAR fans I hang out with on a daily basis have checked in to tell us they are doing all right, but everyone down there needs help.
