A reminder of why I love Catholic schools during Catholic School’s Week

I generally flip through the Delhi Press and glance at each article, occasionally stopping myself to read a story about high school sports, or issues involving my community. This week however, I found an article on the back page of the Community Press written by a guest columnist, Zachary Clark.

I read the article, but not because it involved sports or something important to the community. The reason I read it; the writer graduated from Elder High School with me.

Without going into too much detail (which I am often guilty of) I never really cared for Zach when we were at Elder, until we went to a retreat together in March of 2006. While on retreat I learned that he was just the same as me, just the same as each and every one of my other classmates, and just the same as everyone else.

We bonded while on retreat, and without getting too mushy here, found out that we could at least manage to say hi to one another in passing—more than we had ever done before.

This week across the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Catholic School’s week was celebrated. What a better way to think about the great opportunities afforded to myself through attending a Catholic high school like Elder than by checking up on a former classmate who I hadn’t heard from in years.

As it turns out, he ended up visiting Australia this past September, and wrote, “… I never dreamed of having the chance to go certain places.”

And I never thought I’d get to do the things that I’ve done in three football seasons either, but I’ve had the time of my life. And Zach, well, he described his trip as the “trip of a lifetime.” Sounds like even though we haven’t seen or talked to one another in years, we’re sharing experiences that will last a lifetime.
