A lot will happen this weekend, and a lot has happened since last weekend. Let’s get to catching up…
Bearcats ranked in the top 10 for first time ever
The UC Bearcat football team notched another step in the road to national relevance this past weekend after a 28-20 defeat of Fresno State. Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis gave a pep talk to the Fresno State Bulldogs before the game (http://www.fresnobee.com/sports/bulldogs/story/1652102.html) and then beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Overall a weekend if you’re a fan of Cincinnati football.
This weekend the #10 Bearcats travel to Oxford Ohio to take on the 0-4 Miami Redhawks, or Redskins if you’re that old to remember that—and ironically enough I do. ESPN.com blogger Brian Bennett said there’s no reason for the Bearcats to even bring the Victory Bell on the buses. This one will be a blowout.
Elder/St. X-Be there?
A lot of controversy from Elder High School this week about ticket sales for the much anticipated rivalry game with St. Xavier High School. At least two players ordered over 80 tickets for the game. Students are incensed and loyal alumni are too. Needless to say, I will be there, and due to my tenured position as statistician, there will be no need for a ticket.
I saw the Cincinnati Enquirer’s photo gallery today of Elder and St. X through the years. A lot of talented players played in those games. Such names as UC’s Craig Carey and Danny Milligan, Louisville’s Darius Ashley, Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph, Stanford Cardinal Fred Craig, as well as former Ohio State QB Robbie Schoenhoft, and former Bearcat running back turned Elder assistant coach Bradley Glatthaar all played in games since the 2000s.
This photo shows the Elder field (when it was still grass) in 2002 after the remnants of a hurricane passed through. Elder won that night for the first time in many years (the number escapes me right now). Oh, and my family is in the background in the horseshoe area, but for some reason I was not to be found in that photo. Enjoy…
By the way, I predict a game where the Bombers (St . X) try to hold on to the ball like Fresno State did on Saturday, or the Dolphins did a few weeks ago on Monday night. And you know both of those teams lost.
NASCAR news flash: Martin still leading points
Marty Snider wrote an opening paragraph on NASCAR.com that basically said, “I’m tired of all the ‘give Jimmie Johnson the title’ talk, Mark Martin is still the points leader.” Ok, so I paraphrased but if the Chase ended this very minute, the 50-year old from Batesville, Arkansas would be holding his first ever Championship trophy.
But why talk about that right? A few fellow Markaholics will be in Kansas this weekend. My “letter” to Mark and the #5 team will be posted later on this weekend. Hopefully they receive and enjoy my photos from the Brickyard 400 as well.
Classes are going well
For those of you worried about my academics, well, I’ve learned a bit in the first eight days of classes here at UC. The earth revolves around the sun, we have seasons, people commit crimes, cities are diverse, women are discriminated against and people take pictures for journalistic purposes. It’s going to be a fun and interesting quarter… Have a great Friday
