Mark Martin and Hendrick Motorsports announce contract extension through 2011

The Old Man’s back and NASCAR drivers everywhere are in trouble. Yesterday Mark Martin and Hendrick Motorsports announced that the driver of the #5 car would be back until at least 2011.

As Martin said, “That shouldn't come as any big surprise. Who would want to quit?” After all, he’s tied for the Sprint Cup Series lead in wins and leads the series points standings right now.

Martin fans of yester year were familiar with the old red, white and blue #6 car and have become accustomed to the mixture of yellow, blue and red that adorned the #5 Kellogg’s/Carquest Chevy this season.

Well, in the next two seasons Mark Martin fans will have to re-adjust their eyes and TV sets to adapt to the bright green, black and orange of the GoDaddy.com #5 car. GoDaddy.com has made fame with NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Indy Car’s Danica Patrick as spokespeople. Mark Martin doesn’t exactly fit the GoDaddy.com mold, but he’ll drive anything that’s fast.

And he’s been fast this year.

With two-part time seasons off to recharge his batteries Martin has been on a tear this season. It’s been a great storyline for every NASCAR fan and sportswriters everywhere. The contract extension gives all of us writers at least two more seasons of Mark Martin.

We won’t complain. This is going to be exciting.
